UX and the Peak of the AI Hype Cycle

Everybody seems to be talking about machine learning and artificial intelligence, often with much hype and little understanding. It has become increasingly difficult to separate the useful from the wasteful information, even for the experts.

For somebody in UX, what does that all mean? Why would you want to design an intelligent user interface in the first place? Is such an intelligent system any different from a more traditional system, and if so, how? What are the issues that one should consider when designing a system where some AI methods impact its user experience?

Besides talking about these issues, I also want to address three further topics that typically arise when looking at emerging technologies: What are the benefits? What are the potential costs? Also, what are some of the unintended consequences?

In the end, I will suggest how to proceed from here if you are interested in diving deeper into intelligent user interfaces.
